HEALTHCARE COUNCIL OF WESTERN PA PARTNERS WITH PITTSBURGH STEELERS TO
STRENGTHEN REGION’S FIGHT AGAINST DIABETES

Non-profit and Other Community Partners Join Together to Host TACKLE DIABETES DAY,
Conduct Screenings Ahead of November 13 Steelers v. Saints Game

PITTSBURGH – September __, 2022 – The Healthcare Council of Western Pennsylvania (HCWP) is teaming up with the Pittsburgh Steelers and other community partners to address the region’s diabetes epidemic by conducting a free diabetes screening event – TACKLE DIABETES DAY – prior to the start of the Pittsburgh Steelers v. New Orleans Saints game, Sunday, Nov. 13, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., on Chuck Noll Way, near Acrisure Stadium.

According to Nick Vizzoca, president, HCWP, the region’s hospitals and care providers are
seeing a sustained number of both type 1 and type diabetes relative to our region’s population density. “The Covid-19 pandemic may have caused people who are unknowingly pre-diabetic to delay doctor visits or wellness check-ups, further exacerbating the negative impact diabetes can have,” he said. “Our goal is to turn the tide and help people begin to understand how small changes, for example, may prevent the disease or mitigate it’s ramifications.”

The event, supported by HCWP, the Pittsburgh Steelers, UPMC, Novo Nordisk, iHeart, GraneRx, Giant Eagle and the American Diabetes Association, will be located near the entrance to Acrisure Stadium, where UPMC clinicians and nurses will conduct diabetes screenings.

Pittsburgh Steelers Radio Network host, Stan Savran, will be on-hand to greet fans and encourage screenings. Additionally, Giant Eagle pharmacists will be on-hand to conduct free, pneumonia and COVID-19 vaccinations.

According to Vizzoca, Pittsburgh’s diabetes statistics should not be envied. “Data show the number of commercial inpatient diabetes cases each year is substantially higher than in like markets and higher than the national average,” he said. “We can do better, and we must.”

The ADA estimates approximately 1.4 million people in Pennsylvania have diabetes and an additional 325,000 are still undetected – enough to fill Acrisure Stadium nearly five times.
